Trek Overview
Snow Lake – Hispar La Trek in Pakistan is a high altitude Glacier basin over 16km wide located at the head of the Biafo and Hispar glaciers. The Ancient highway of Ice which connects the two Great mountain kingdoms; Hunza in the west with Baltistan in the east. Combine the Biafo Hispar and Biafo Glacier is 120 km, which make it the second longest glacier in the world outside the Polar Region.
Snow Lake – Hispar La Trek Pakistan visits a remote and unspoiled region of the Karakoram where very few other trekking groups visit so the trail will be quiet and it is unlikely you will see other trekkers along the way. Being the most remote area, it serves as the last stronghold for many animals including Himalayan bear, ibex, Markhor and the snow leopard. Snow lake is arguably the most challenging and rewarding area in the Karakoram for trekkers and mountaineers. There will be places where booth the group and porters will have to rope up. In places the trail is difficult as we have to climb over moraine ridges covered by loose rocks; traverse a number of tributary glaciers and cross glacial streams. Snow Lake Trek Pakistan offers the most stunning mountain scenery and idyllic campsites.
Snow Lake – Hispar La Trek Pakistan starts from Islamabad. Your Guide will meet and Greet you at the Islamabad International Airport, then transfer you to the hotel and have a group briefing in the afternoon about the snow lake trek. Next day you will catch the spectacular mountains view flights to Skardu. On route you will have the first glimpse of the great Nanga Parbat, K2 and the other stunning Himalayan & Karakoram Mountain Peaks. After checking in to the Hotel, rest of the day is for sightseeing and preparation for the snow lake Trek. Skardu is the Capital of Baltistan and it is the getaway to Snow Lake – Hispar La Trek Pakistan, K2, Deosai Plato, Masherbrum Peaks and many other famous Karakoram Peaks. In Skardu Trekkers and climber usually do their Finale purchasing and top ups for their journey. Following day we will drive along the Mighty Indus, Shigar and Braldu River to the lush green Shigar Valley towards Askoli. Askoli is the last village before entering into the wilderness of Karakorum.
After spending your first night in the camp under the starry canvas, the Snow Lake – Hispar La Trek Pakistan starts by following the K2 Base Camp trail and then turns west onto the Biafo Hispar Glacier. The trail for next few days follows loose rocky moraine ridges on the glacier although the campsites at Namla, Mango and Baintha are located in grassy areas behind lateral moraines. From Baintha camp we go back onto the glacier and follow the wide ice highway making the walking relatively easy compared to lose rock earlier on the trek. There will be sufficient time to take two rest days during the snow lake trek, this provides vital acclimatisation and enable us to take a splendour of some of the most scenic mountains which you will never find anywhere else in the world. We will camp at the hight of 5,151m, which will give us the opportunity to experience the magnificent view of the whole area including an unforgettable sunset across the Hunza Valley.
Having reached the highest point of our journey on Hispar La, we begin the descent into Hunza to complete the traverse; we walk through green meadows with streams and wild flowers to reach Bitenmal. Here You will find the huts of local friendly Shepards, they may offer you some fresh milk and dairy product. we will continue our snow lake trek towards Hunza by camping at the Hisper Village. We will establish our last camp of the Trek at Huru where you will start feeling the hot climate. Jeep drive will take you to Karimabad, the ancient capital of Hunza. sightseeing Karimabad by visitng the local Bazar, historical Baltit and Altit Fort. Baltit Fort was built 700 years ago by the people from Baltistan who travel to Hunza via Snow lake. Baltistan had a very strong cultural and ethnical relation with the Laddakh territory to the east. Not surprisingly, the structure of Baltit Fort was influenced by Ladakhi/Tibetan architecture, with some resemblance to the patala palace in Lhasa. You will notice that the Hunza region has a language and culture very different to Baltistan. Drive along Hunza river on the Karakoram Highway towards Gilgit will go through the view-point of famous Rakaposhi (7,788).

Trango Adventure has a long track record of organising Snow Lake – Hispar La Trek Pakistan. We have had groups successfully Completed the Snow Lake – Hispar la Trek on many previous occasions.
We designed our itinerary based on 40 Years of experience, which is the best in terms of acclimatization, safety and enjoyment. It is our intention to keep to the day by day itinerary detailed below, although there might be some flexibility due to local conditions or other factors beyond our control. If this is the case the trek leader will do everything possible to work out the changes to the itinerary in order to minimize your inconvenience.
Adventure travel requires an open and flexible attitude. You may experience extreme conditions, unpredictable weather and
last-minute changes to the itinerary beyond our control. The ability to work in team is an important aspect of all of our trips.

ARRIVAL DAY IN ISLAMABAD:
Welcome to Pakistan. Most of the international flights arrives at Islamabad International Airport in the mornings. Your Guide will meet and greet you at the airport, then you will be transfer to the hotel. Rest of the days is free to recover from your journey. Later in the day, when everyone has arrived, we will have a group briefing about the Snow Lake – Hispar la Trek Pakistan. Depending on the time available to us, there may be an option to do some sightseeing in Islamabad, A purpose-built City in 1961 as the new capital of Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD TO SKARDU FLIGHT (2,228m), 45 MINUTES:
If case of flight cancellation, you will Drive KKH to Chilas, Isb to Chilas, 461km. 8-9 H-Drive.
Today you will travel to Islamabad International Airport to take a spectacular flight (weather permitting) across the mountains to Skardu. Its a 45 minute flight which offers Spectacular Mountains views of Himalaya & Karakoram mountain range, you can also enjoy the breathtaking views of world’s 9th highest peak, Nanga Parbat (8,126m), if weather is clear then we might be able to see K2 and Gandogoro Pass as well. Check in to the Hotel, res of the day will be spent visiting the local Bazar, historical forts, scenic lakes or visiting ancient rock inscriptions, one of which is of 8th century Manthal Lord Buddha Rock that shows traces of Buddhist monks and pilgrims who had influence in the area before Islam.

SIGHTSEEING & PREPARATION DAY SKARDU:
In the morning you will walk up to the remains of Kharpocho Fort (build early 1700), which overlooks the town and has a great view of the Indus River. If you are into photography then this is a perfect location to take photos of Skardu Town at sunrise or sunset. (we can arrange this for you). We will then walk to a small village, called Organic village, which grows all its crops organically. The afternoon is free to explore. perhaps you would like to take an optional jeep tour to Satpara Lake or explore the bazaar.

SKARDU TO ASKOLI (3,000m) 7 HOURS DRIVE:
Following day you will drive along the Mighty Indus, Shigar and Braldu Rive towards Askoli. Askoli is the last village before entering in to wilderness of Karakoram. We will spend our first night under the Stars in Askoli, which is high above the thundering Braldu River. Askole is a single street of wooden houses, backed by irrigated fields of corn, potatoes and groves of apricot trees.

TREK TO NAMLA, (3,566m), 6-7 HOURS WALK:
Walking session of Snow lake – Biafo & Hispar la trek will start by following the K2 Base Camp trail and then turns west onto the Biafo Glacier. The trail ascends over a shoulder to reach the left moraine and descends on to the glacier then back on to the left bank where the grassy camping site called Namla is located behind a lateral moraine.

TREK TO MANGO (3,720m), 5-6 HOURS WALK:
After crossing a fracture zone on the glacier we reach the centre of the glacier where you follow moraine ridges, underfoot there is loose rock making this a challenging day. We set up camp on the left bank of the Biafo in a grassy area.

The route continues up the centre of the glacier on a broad highway of ice making the walking easier than yesterday. You cross to the right and come off the glacier to a grassy area where Baintha camp is located.

REST & ACCLIMATISATION DAY:
Today will be our rest day of Snow Lake – Biafo & Hispar La Trek. Acclimatisation day for you and the porters in order to help with acclimatisation to the high altitude and the thin air. You can relax in the camp or if feeling energetic walk up a ridge behind camp with fine views of Latok group and The Ogre. (perfection location for photography) Look out for the Ibex that can often be seen on the grassy slopes above camp.

TREK TO MARFOGORO (4,300m) 6 HOURS WALK:
This trail is steep and loose to get onto the glacier however once there we follow the flat glacier, making it relatively straightforward walking. Further along the glacier there are some crevasses to be aware of where depending on the conditions we might rope up to safeguard our passage. There are superb views of many peak including The Ogre (7,813m) and also we will get the first views of the Hispar La and Snow Lake.

TREK TO KARPHOGORO (4680m) 6 HOURS WALK:
Wake up to a breathtaking sunrise view across the snow lake and over the Hispar pass. Have a leisurely breakfast and continue walking on the highway of ice with spectacular views of the Karakoram range.

TREK TO HISPAR LA BASE CAMP (4,590m) 6 HOURS WALK:
Today you will walk to the south end of a large snowy flat area known as Snow Lake, finding our way through a network of crevasses. Snow Lake is a high altitude glacial basin over 16km wide at the head of the Biafo and Hispar glaciers. Martin Conway, the first foreign visitor, gave Snow Lake the name in 1892 and described this area as “beyond all comparison the finest view of mountains it has ever been my lot to behold, nor do I believe the world can hold a finer.

TREK TO HISPAR LA BY CROSSING SNOW LAKE (5,150m) 6 HOURS WALK:
We traverse across the vast Snow Lake area and make the ascent to Hispar La. The climb to Hispar La is not too steep although it always feels quite strenuous at this altitude, we also have to be aware of the crevasses in this area. The views from Hispar La is fantastic, looking down Biafo glacier to Snow Lake and The Ogre and other side down Hispar glacier to peaks in Hunza.

CROSS Hispar La AND TREK TO KANI BASA (4,510m) 5 HOURS WALK:
After an early start you will descend from Hispar La crossing a crevasse area and then later on the glacier flattens out. You have to cross Kani Basa glacier which is fracture zone where the two glaciers collide. Shortly afterwards we reach our camp located in a grassy ablation valley with good views of Kanjut Sar (7,760m).

TREK TO BAKHTUR BAIG (4,470m) 6 HOURS WALK:
Today is a tough trekking day of our snow lake trek in Pakistan. Continue descending on Hispar glacier towards Hunza valley. You have to trek through several moraine ridges, climb over loose scree slopes and cross several glacial streams to arrive at Bakhtur Baig camp. Set up camp on the right side of the glacier and enjoy the free afternoon.

TREK TO SHIGHAM BARIS, (4,170m) 7 HOURS WALK:
Wake up early, have breakfast, and continue descending on the glacier. Cross a side glacier, climb over loose scree, and follow the trail surrounded by wildflowers to arrive at the Shigham Baris campsite. Shigham Baris camp is beautifully located on the grassy land.

TREK TO BITENMAL (3,760m) 6 HOURS WALK:
After an hour you will descend down a steep bank to cross another side glacier then back to the valley as before where the walking is good. Camp at Bitenmal is in a large meadow often used by herders from Hispar village. If you are in luck then we might get some fresh milk and other dairy products from the Shepard.

TREK TO HISPAR VILLAGE (2,300m):
Today you will continue your trek towards Hispar village by crossing a bridge. You will certainly notice the vibrant green of the orchards and terraced fields after the black and white scenery of the Hispar Glacier. Depending on the condition of the road we may meet our jeeps in the village if the road is broken then we have a further walk followed by a short drive to our last camp of Snow Lake – Biafo & Hispar La Trek Pakistan.

DRIVE TO KARIMABAD, (2,440m) 4 HOURS DRIVE:
A jeep drive for a couple of hours to Nagar village along a rather narrow track before reaching the Karakoram Highway. You will drive up the road to Karimabad where we check into a hotel and the rest of the day is free to wash up, relax and explore the town.

SIGHTSEEING OF KARIMABAD AND DRIVE TO GILGIT, 3 HOURS DRIVE:
Karimabad is the capital of Hunza valley, today you have the chance to explore Karimabad, it is an interesting town spectacularly situated on a hillside to the north of the road with views of the fertile valley below (due to their extensive irrigation system) and a glimpses of snowy mountains. You will visit the Altit and Baltit Forts, dating from the 13th century the Baltit fort, once the home of the ruling Mir, guards the valley and is now a museum and the Altit fort is even more dramatic perched above the Hunza river. In the afternoon we will drive to Gilgit.

During the Snow lake – hispar la trek Pakistan, the group will spend all nights in good standard hotel and Tents. Accommodation at each of these hotels and tents are twin-sharing with en-suite facilities. If you are travelling by yourself you will be paired with another single client of the same sex. SKARDU FLIGHTS
Skardu is a weather-dependent airport. Since the valley is completely surrounded by high mountains, planes can only land here in good visibility and this means flights to and from Skardu are never guaranteed. The planes do fly more often than not, but cancellations can and do occur and in these circumstances we will travel by road.
HEALTH & VACCINATION
You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you specific require any vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella), along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malarial prophylaxis is dicretionary for this trip. Malaria exists in the area around Islamabad. However, incidences of urban transmission of malaria are extremely low. In Skardu and in the mountains there is no malaria risk. A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission and for travellers having transited for more than 12 hrs through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dentist check up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites

Snow Lake – Hispar la trek Pakistan involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will be above 4000 metres for 1-2 days. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should get some basic advice on Tours at high altitude.
CLIMATE
From mid June to August, we can expect to encounter temperatures as high as 40°C at karachi, Multan and Lahore, and 25°C in The Gilgit & Baltistan Region. Weather is generally good throughout the summer season,with clear skies and little rain or snow. However, weather in mountainous areas is difficult to predict, and short-lived storms can occur at any time.

PAKISTAN VISA
All nationalities require a visa to enter in Pakistan. The visa fee is approximately GBP £134 and you must apply for it prior to departure. To obtain a visa for Pakistan you will require a letter of introduction from an approved agency which will be provided by Trango Adventure.Visa applications can be made ONLINE or in person at one of 5 application centres located in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bradford. The following checklist should help you with your packing. As a general rule, you should always try to keep the weight of your equipment to a minimum. The packed weight of your trek bag whilst trekking including your sleeping bag and mattress should be no more than 15.5 kgs. This limit which is set by the porters is strictly enforced and bags will be weighed prior to setting off on trek. Anything not required on the trek can be left at the group hotel in Islamabad. Please note that your mountaineering equipment will be packed into additional, communal kitbags at the start of the trekking and this equipment will not be part of your personal 15.5 kgs weight limit.
