Manaslu Trek Nepal
Trek Overview
Manaslu Trek is an adventurous trekking trail in the Himalayan mountains of Nepal. Manaslu region area for trekking in 1990. Manaslu Trek is a journey to the base of Mt. Manaslu (8,163 meters), the eighth tallest mountain in the world. Manaslu is still categorized as a ‘controlled area’ so special trekking permits are required to trek here through a registered trekking company.
Manaslu Trek is an important trading link with Tibet for the entire region of Northern Gorkha. After a few days of walking, we will feel like entering a secret Buddhist world of monasteries, mani walls and prayer flags. Impressive is the exploration of Tsum Valley famous for Milarepa caves, Mu Gompa and yak pastures. The crossing of Larkya La (5160m) pass, one of the highest Himalayan valleys, is a major highlight. The pass offers remarkable panoramas of Manaslu, HimalChuli (7,893m), Himlung (7126m) and Cheo Himal (6820m).
Over 110 species of birds, 33 mammals, 11 butterflies and three reptiles were recorded in the area including snow leopard, grey wolf, musk deer, blue sheep and Himalayan Thar. The region is inhabited by Bhotia people, such as Nubri, Tsum and Gurungs who have closer cultural and geographical ties with Tibet than Nepal.
The Manaslu Trek has recently increased in popularity among trekkers. The trail is along the valley of the Budi Gandaki River up to the Larkya La pass (5160m). The first 4-5 days follow the narrow valley up via Machha Khola, Jagat, Ghap, Namrung and Lho. Samagaon, the biggest village, is one of the highlights of the trek; people here follow Buddhism. The major peaks are Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli (Peak 29), Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal and Sonam Samdo.
The “Manaslu Trek” is located in the historical Gorkha district of Nepal; sightings of high mountains, canyons, wild ponies and ethnic villages are common. Some even call it the best all-around trek in Nepal. The Manaslu trek is also an alternative to the Annapurna Circuit trek. Trekking here uses lodges more often now, making the camping choice a less popular option.

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you specifically require any vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella), along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malarial prophylaxis is discretionary for this trip. However, incidences of urban transmission of malaria are extremely low. A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission and for travellers having transited for more than 12 hrs through an airport of a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. On holidays to more remote areas, you should also have a dentist check-up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites

ALTITUDE
Manaslu Trek involves going to a very high altitude. During your trip, you will be spending at least one night above 4000 metres and/or trekking to 5000 metres or above. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should read the advice on trekking at high altitude on our website which can be viewed via the link below. Unless you have previous experience of trekking above 4000 metres you should consult one of our trekking experts before embarking on this holiday. On this trip, we carry a portable altitude chamber (PAC bag) and/or bottled oxygen for use in emergencies.
CLIMATE
October-December and March-May are the best times to visit Nepal. These months either side of the monsoon are neither too hot nor too cold, offering the best conditions for trekking. At either of these periods, you will encounter a wide range of daytime temperatures during your trip from approximately 25ºC in Kathmandu to approximately 14ºC at 3000 metres and approximately 3ºC at 5000m. The ‘real feel’ temperature in the middle of the day will be much warmer than this. At night in the rarefied air, the temperatures plummet. You can expect to experience overnight temperatures below freezing once above approximately 4000m. and at our highest camps night time temperatures may drop as low as –15ºC. Extended periods of rain or snow are very unlikely outside of the monsoon period but short-lived storms can and do occur.

A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit.
TRANSIT VIA INDIA
If you are travelling via India (Delhi or Calcutta) to your destination you may also require a visa for India. This may apply even if you are not leaving the airport unless your baggage has been checked through to your destination. Generally, if you use the same carrier for both legs of your journey, you will not need an India Visa.
VISA NEPAL
All nationalities require a visa and this can be obtained on arrival at Kathmandu Airport. The visa process is automated and this includes having your photograph taken. The visa fee is $25 for 15 days, $40 for 30 days, and $100 for 90 days. The visa is FREE for children under 10 years. The visa allows multiple re-entry. Payment must be made in cash and USD, GBP or Euros are accepted. Whilst these are not now needed for the visa process, we recommend that you travel with at least 2 spare passport photographs.
TREKKING PERMITS – WHAT DO WE NEED FROM YOU?
Mount Everest Marathon (MEM). Ganesh Himal Panorama Trek (GHP). Lamjung Himal Trek (LHT). Pokhara to Kathmandu Bike (PKMB). Shey Gompa and Inner Dolpo (DOL). Dolpo to Mugu Trek (DTM). Middle Hills Arun River to Dudh Kosi (MHT). Around Manaslu Trek (MAN). Kangchenjunga to Makalu Lumba Sumba La (LSL).
For each of these holidays, we need your passport details and we need to send through to Nepal ahead of your departure a scan of the information pages of your passport and a scan of a passport-style photograph of yourself. Please send these scans to us once your holiday is guaranteed.
The following checklist should help you with your packing. As a general rule, you should always try to keep the weight of your equipment to a minimum. The packed weight of your trek bag whilst trekking including your sleeping bag and mattress should be no more than 18.5 kg. This limit which is set by the porters is strictly enforced and bags will be weighed before setting off on the trek. Anything not required on the trek can be left at the group hotel in Islamabad. Please note that your mountaineering equipment will be packed into additional, communal kitbags at the start of the trekking and this equipment will not be part of your personal 18.5 kg weight limit.
We will send you a list of detailed items closer to your Holiday departure.
