Trek Overview

Thalle La Trek Pakistan is through a mountain pass (4,572m) between Shigar and Khaplu Valley in Pakistan. It is an easy Trek of 11-13 days leading over the Thalle Pass (4,572 M). This trek is a meaningful plan on the 2-week time scale, and for a diversity of reasons it undertakes to be very exciting indeed. Crossing of Thalle La can be possible from the Shigar and Khaplu valleys.

Home to some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world, thriving cities, colourful markets and warm hospitality, a trip to this part of the world is bound to excite even the most worldly travellers. Having run trips here for more than 4 decades, we have the expertise to make your trip safe, fun and enjoyable. On this private custom-made tour, you will travel to the mountainous northeast of the country to a region known as Baltistan, where you will trek for four days witnessing some of the Karakoram Mountain’s most spectacular scenery, top and tailing your hike with stays in two of the regions most fabulous hotels, Shigar Fort and Khaplu Palace.

Our Thalle La Trek Pakistan starts from the purpose-built green city of Islamabad. Your Guide will meet and greet you at the Islamabad International Airport and then transfer you to the group hotel. We will meet again in the afternoon to give you a briefing about Thalle La Trek. After spending the night in Islamabad, we will drive to the airport to take the spectacular mountain view flight to Skardu. From the fight, you will see the Majestic Himalayan and Karakoram mountains. If the weather is clear, you can see the mighty K2, Broad Peak, and the naked mountain, Nanga Parbat. We will spend our night in Skardu.

Skardu is the capital of the ancient Himalayan kingdom Baltistan. It is the getaway to k2, Gasherbrum, Gondogoro Pass, Baltoro and other mountain valleys. Sightseeing in Skardu will be Sadpara Lake, Kharpocho Fort, and the local Bazar. The next day, we will follow the Indus, then the Shyok rivers to Khaplu. Khaplu is the district capital of Khaplu Valley. We will stay in the historical Khaplu fort and visit the local Bazar and the Chaqchan Mosque. Today we will drive to Thalle Village to start our Trek. Our walking session of Thalle La Trek Pakistan will start from here onwards for a few days until we reach Shigar. Shigar is the District Capital of Shigar Valley. In Shigar we will stay in the Historical Shigar Fort. Shigar and Khapulu fort used to be the old residences of the local royal families, which now have turned into a fabulous 4-star Hotel.

After spending the night in Shigar Fort, we will drive back to Skardu airport to take the spectacular flight back to Islamabad. Will spend one night in Islamabad, then the next day transfer you to the airport for your flight back home.

We strongly believe that the Thalle La Trek Pakistan, the Karakoram Mountains of Baltistan Valley and its amazingly friendly people will create a lifelong memory, which will stay with you for a long time.

We are organising four fixed departures of “Thalle la Trek Pakistan” in June- July and August. The thalle la trek is an easy walk which does not require mountaineering skills.

Introduction

Trango Adventure has a long track record of offering the Thalle la trek and other adventure holidays in Pakistan. We have had groups successfully cross Thalle La on previous occasions. Our Thalle La Trek itinerary is based on over 40 Years of experience, which is the best in terms of acclimatisation, safety and enjoyment. We intend to keep to the day-by-day itinerary detailed below, although there might be some flexibility due to local conditions or other factors beyond our control. If this is the case the Trek leader will do everything possible to work out the changes to the itinerary to minimize your inconvenience.

Adventure travel requires an open and flexible attitude. You may experience extreme conditions, unpredictable weather and last-minute changes to the itinerary beyond our control. The ability to work in a team is an important aspect of all of our trips.

Boarding our plane, we have an exciting flight out of the valley, once again, passing by Nanga Parbat before turning south for Islamabad. Arriving in the Pakistani capital after a period in the mountains is always a strange experience, and it takes a little time to get used to the hustle and bustle, especially the traffic. Our private bus will be waiting at the airport to transfer us to the group hotel, and once we have settled in it will be time to take lunch (unless we have experienced unusual flight delays). After lunch, the rest of the day is free for self-guided sightseeing or to relax at the hotel. Your Guide will advise you on the possibilities for sightseeing in Islamabad. Shopping for hand-made Iranian & Afghan rugs is a usually popular option. This evening, we will come together for a celebratory meal at the hotel or in a local restaurant.

In Case of Flight cancellation, we will drive down the Karakoram Highway. We will arrive in Chillas late afternoon.

CONTINGENCY DAY IN CASE OF DELAYS:

Contingency day in case of delays – Islamabad: If driving down the Karakoram Highway, you will arrive in Islamabad late afternoon. If you managed to fly the day before, then you will spend today sightseeing in Islamabad. In the evening, we will have a final group meal.

Skardu is a ‘weather dependent’ airport, which means the planes will only fly here if the visibility allows line of sight to the runway by the pilot on the approach. Fortunately, the weather is mostly clear in the Karakoram but local weather conditions can bring clouds and rain from time to time. If we cannot fly, we will travel down to Islamabad by road along the spectacular Karakoram Highway. If we flew up to Skardu, this would be a bonus as it is a fantastic travel experience in its own right. The drive down the Indus River to Islamabad takes two days, so this is an important contingency day to allow for this. If we have flown to Islamabad, this will be a further day for sightseeing in the capital, and our staff will advise the group on the options available for today.

INTERNAL FLIGHTS

SKARDU FLIGHT

Skardu is a weather-dependent airport. Since the valley is surrounded by high mountains, planes can only land here in good visibility and this means flights to and from SKARDU are never guaranteed. The planes do fly more often than not, but cancellations can and do occur, and in these circumstances, we will travel by road.

HEALTH & VACCINATIONS

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you specifically require any vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the United Kingdom and other developed countries e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella), along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malarial prophylaxis is discretionary for this trip. Malaria exists in the area around Islamabad and Rawalpindi. However, incidences of urban transmission of malaria are extremely low. In Skardu and the mountains, there is no malaria risk. On holidays to more remote areas, you should also have a dentist check-up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites

Trango Adventure does not provide any advice on travel insurance, although it is highly recommended that you have travel insurance which covers the activities which you are likely to be undertaking on your holiday.

ALTITUDE

Thalle la trek involves going to high altitudes. During your trip, you will be above 3,000 metres for 1-2 days. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but we must follow some simple rules to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should get some basic advice on Tours at high altitudes.

CLIMATE

From mid-June to August, we can expect to encounter temperatures as high as 35°C at Islamabad, Chilas and Gilgit, and 25°C in The Skardu Region. Weather is generally good throughout the summer season, with clear skies and little rain or snow. However, weather in mountainous areas is difficult to predict, and short-lived storms can occur at any time.
