Shimshal Pass Trek is located on the border between Pakistan and China in the Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan. Shimshal Trek gives you the opportunity to get better perspective on the way of Shimshali people life as well a spectacular mountain vistas of the Karakoram mountain range. Islamabad International Airport is the nearest international airport to arrive for the Shimshal Pass Trek. Our representative will meet and greet you at the Islamabad Airport and transfer you to the hotel for a rest. You will spend one night in Islamabad then head towards Naran Town in the north for a night stay. En route you will pass some historical towns, Taxila, Hassan Abdal and Abbotabad. Naran Town is in the lush green Naran Valley which is very popular among domestic tourist for short holidays. After spending the night in Naran, you will continue your journey on the Naran road then join the famous Karakoram Highway with a spectacular view of Nanga Parbat and Rakaposhi (7,788m) mountains to Karimabad. Karimabad is the capital of modern Hunza Valley. Here you will explore the local Bazar, 0ver 700 years old UNESCO listed Baltit and Altit Forts, and experience the fantastic sunrise view from eagle nest view point. After spending two nights in Karimabad, today you will drive along the Hunza River on The Karakoram Highway to reach Shimshal village. Shimshal Village is 3,100 meter above sea level, which is the highest settlement of the Shimshal Valley. You will arrive in Shimshal Village in the early afternoon, rest of the afternoon is to explore the village and get to know the local people. After spending the night in Shimshal, today will be your first trekking day of Shimshal Pass Trek towards Pastfurzeen campsite. You will cross two rivers to reach Garsar, here you will have lunch with a spectacular mountain views. Night stay in the camp under the stars at the Pastfurzeen campsite. Next day, after breakfast you will continue your epic walking journey to Arobab Peryeen camp by crossing Pamirthung and Chichan Bridge. Another beautiful night under the canvas in the camp then trek to Shuijarab. Shuijarab is the summer herding settlement of the Shimshali people. Shepards from Shimshal Valley stay here for 3-4 months with their, Yaks, Goats, and sheep. You will have the opportunity to speak to the Shepards and get to know the Shimshali People in their summer settlements. After spending two nights at the summer settlements with the Shepards, today you will trek to Shimshal Pass. Here you will camp at the bank of a crystal Clear blue water lake on the green meadow. Night in the camp and next day optional trek/climb to the top of Manglik Sar (6,050 meter). After visiting the Shimshal Pass, you will return by descending towards, Arbob Peyreen, Past Furzeen then to Shimshal Village. From Shimshal Village you will drive to Karimabad for night stay and next day drive on Karakoram Highway to Naran Town. One night in Naran and next morning drive to Islamabad. After spending a night in Islamabad, we will transfer you to Islamabad International Airport for your flight back home. Please make sure to book your return flight from Islamabad on the last day of the Itinerary. Your Shimshal Pass Trek journey will conclude here.

Trango Adventure has been organising Shimshal Pass Trek since many years. We have successfully organised Shimshal Pass Trek for Solo travellers, couples and private groups from around the world. We designed our itinerary based on Over 40 Years of experience and the local knowledge, which is the best in terms of acclimatisation, safety and enjoyment.

It is our intention to keep to the day by day itinerary detailed below, although there might be some flexibility due to local conditions or other factors beyond our control. If this is the case the trek leader will do everything possible to work out the changes to the itinerary in order to minimise your inconvenience.

Shimshal Pass Trek requires an open and flexible attitude. You may experience extreme conditions, unpredictable weather and last-minute changes to the itinerary beyond our control. The ability to work in team is an important aspect of all of our trips.

ARRIVAL DAY IN ISLAMABAD PAKISTAN:

Most of the international flights arrives at Islamabad International Airport in the mornings. There are many transit and direct flights to Islamabad from all major cities. Our representative will meet and greet you at the airport, then transfer you to the hotel for rest. Rest of the days is free to recover from your journey. Later in the day, when everyone has arrived, we will have a group briefing about the Shimshal Pass Trek. Depending on the time available to us, there might be an option to do some sightseeing in Islamabad. Islamabad was built in 1961 as the new capital of Pakistan.

DRIVE TO NARAN (231 km) 8 HOURS:

After Breakfast you will leave the green capital behind and head towards the north to Naran Town for night stay. You will pass through historical towns, Taxila, Hassan Abdal and Abbot Abad to reach Naran. Karakoram Highway starts from Hasan Abdal, you will follow Karakoram Highway up to Mansehra then turn right to join Naran Road to Naran. Naran is a small town in the Lush green Naran Valley which is popular among local tourist for short holidays. Temperature here will be much cooler so you will have a good night sleep.

DRIVE TO KARIMABAD (320 km) 7 HOURS:

In the morning you will continue your epic journey on Naran road then Join the famous Karakoram Highway to Karimabad. Karakoram Highway was a joint venture between China and Pakistan, which was completed in 1973. En route you will pass Babusar Pass, the junction point of Karakoram – Himalaya – Hindukush, spectacular view of Nanga Parbat and Rakaposhi (7,788m) peak. Travelling on the Karakoram Highway along the Hunza River provides spectacular mountain vistas all the way to Karimabad.

REST DAY & SIGHTSEEING IN KARIMABAD (2,440m):

Karimabad is the capital of Hunza Valley. It is located beautifully above the Valley and right under the Ultar Peak (7,833 m). You will have full day to explore the local Bazar, Unesco listed 700 years old Baltit and Altit Fort. In the evening you will head to Eagle nest which is the perfect view point of Rakaposhi (7,788m) Peak, Hunza Valley and an incredible place to watch sunset.

DRIVE TO SHIMSHAL, (3,100 m) 120 km, 3-4 HOURS DRIVE:

Today you will rejoin The Karakoram Highway and drive along the Hunza River to Passu then turn right to take the Shimshal Road to Shimshal Village. You will pass, Attaabad Lake, Gulmit and some other beautiful villages of Hunza Valley to reach Shimshal. You will arrive around lunch time in Shimshal, afternoon is free to explore the village and get to know the local people and their way of living. Shimshal is a traditional small Historical Village with a population of around 1,100 people. It’s home to the Wakhi ethnic group of Shimshal Valley.

TREK TO PAST FURZEEN, (3,360 m) 6-7 HOURS WALK:

Shimshal Village is the getaway to Shimshal Pass. Today will be your first walking day of the Shimshal Pass Trek. First walking day of the trek is always tough as your body system is just getting use to the high altitude thin air. You will cross two bridges to reach Garsar where you will have lunch. After lunch you will continue to Past Furzeen campsite for night stay.

TREK TO ARBOB PERYEEN, (3,930m) 6 HOURS WALK:

After spending the night in the camp, you will continue your epic Shimshal Pass Trek to Arbob Pyreen camp by passing local Shimshali people coming down or going up to Shimshal Pass. Some part of the trek will be on steep hill and crossing Chichan bridge to cross a river. A person called Chichan donated the funds to the Shimshal community to build this bridge that’s why its called Chichan Bridge. You will have lunch at Parin then continue walking to Arbob Peyreen. Through out the day you will have spectacular view of Manglik Sar (6,050 m), Chashkin (6,000) and many other famous Karakoram Peaks.

TREK TO SHUIJERAB, (4,450m) 6 HOURS WALK:

Today will be an easy trekking day with a spectacular mountains views around. After breakfast you will walk to Shuijarab. Shuijarab is the summer herd settlement of the Shimshalis. Mostly women’s from Shimshal Valley spent 3-4 months on the wonderful green meadow with their Yaks, Goats and sheep. During their stay they collect Yeast, Butter and cheese which they use in the harsh winter season. Shepherdesses from the Shimshali valley are famous for their friendliness, welcoming and hospitality. Wonderfull opportunity to meet and see the way of life of the locals to get an authentic travel experience.

REST & ACCLIMATISATION DAY:

Today is a free day to spent at the summer herd of Shimshal Valley. Wake up early morning if you would like to witness the daily hustle and bustle of Yakes and other cattle’s leaving their yards and going out for the day. Meet the Shimshali shepherds and get to know their daily life routines in this Summer pasture. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain an authentic travel experience.

TREK TO SHIMSHAL PASS, (4,750m) 5 HOURS WALK:

After spending two nights at Shuijarab, today you will trek to Shimshal Pass. First few hours of the trek is hard then you will be awarded with a lush green meadow and the crystal clear blue water of  Shimshal Pass lakes. You will set up your tents on the bank of Shimshal Pass lake. Enjoy the spectacular view of Manglik Sar and other majestic Karakoram Peaks.

Annually, at the end of July or the beginning of August, people from the Shimshal Valley organise Yak racing festival at Shimshal Pass. Local people take part in this ancient Yak race followed by singing and dancing. If you are doing the Shimshal Pass Trek during that time than you must experience this festival which is the only kind of race in the the world.

CLIMB MANGLIK SAR & RETURN:

Today is the optional climbing/trekking day to Manglik Sar (6,050m). You do not need to have special skills or equipment but you must be physically fit to do a 10-12 hour return walk with a 1500 meter ascent and 1500 descent. Your might need crampons and ice axe for the summit. From the top of Manglik Sar you will have a spectacular view of K2, Mustagh Peak ranges and many other famous Peaks.

If you are not interested in the Manglik Sar climbing than you will have another day to enjoy the beauty of Shimshal Pass.

DRIVE TO KARIMABAD, 120 km 4 HOURS DRIVE:

At the village, after saying farewell to your porters and crews, drive on Shimshal Road to the junction point of Karakoram Highway then drive down the Hunza valley along Hunza River to reach Karimabad. You will pass through the Attabad tunnel which was build to connect Khunjerab Pass. Attabad Lake was formed in January 2010 as a result of a Landslide which blocked the whole Hunza Valley. Before the adjacent road and tunnels were completed, all traffic had to be carried across the Attabad Lake by boats. Boats are now only used by tourist to enjoy the scenic view of the mountains from this blue water lake.

We will arrive in Karimabad around lunch time, rest of the afternoon is free to explore Karimabad or visit the local market to purchase locally hand made souvenirs.

DRIVE TO NARAN, 320 km, 6 HOURS:

After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, we will set out to rejoin the Karakoram Highway to drive down the Hunza Valley to reach Naran. Hunza Valley is divided into two parts by Hunza River. Hunza will be on your right and Nagar will be on the left. Nagar is dominated by the mass of Rakaposhi  (7,788m) Mountain. We will stop at the view point of Rakaposhi (7,788m) to take photos and have a tea break. Beyond Rakaposhi (7,788m), you will Pass the the view point of world three longest mountain range, Himalaya-Karakoram-Hindukush and Nanga Parbat. You will leave Karakoram Highway before Chilas to follow Naran Road via Babusar Pass to arrive in Naran for the night stay. Naran lies on the bank of Naran river with a gorgeous alpine scenery.

DRIVE TO ISLAMABAD (2,31 km) 8 HOURS:

Today you will drive down the Naran Valley to Mansehra city where you will rejoin Karakoram Highway. Mansehra is a city of Pashto speaking Pashtuns and Hindko speaking Punjabi settlers. From Mansehra KKH drops down to Abbot Abbad, which was established by the British in 1853 as a cantonment town, and it named after James Abbott, the first deputy commissioner of Hazara District. Abbott Abad has maintained its military tradition through the presence of the Pakistan Military Academy, it is also the home of some of Pakistan’s most prestigious public Schools. Continue our journey to Hassan Abdal, which is the ending point of Karakoram Highway. Islamabad is around 50 km from Hassan Abdal.

ACCOMODATION 

During the Shimshal Pass Trek, group will spend nights in clean tents and good Internationale tourist standard hotels. Accommodation at each of  tents and hotels are twin-sharing with en-suite facilities. If you are travelling by yourself you will be paired with another single client of the same-sex. It is possible to hire a single tent and room for an additional cost. Additional hotel nights in Islamabad are also available. For hotel prices and single supplement costs please refer to the dates and prices page of the trip on our website. Hotels are subject to availability and prices may vary.

HEALTH & VACCINATION

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you specific require any vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella), along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malarial prophylaxis is discretionary for this trip. Malaria exists in the area around Islamabad. However, incidences of urban transmission of malaria are extremely low. On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dentist check up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites

Shimshal Pass Trek will be led by an experienced and government licence Mountain Guide. During the trek the group will be accompanied by a full support crew.

ALTITUDE

Shimshal Pass Trek involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will be above 3,000 metres for 1-2 days. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatize successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should get some basic advice on Tours and Treks at high altitude.

CLIMATE

From mid June to August, we can expect to encounter temperatures as high as 40°C at karachi, Multan and Lahore, and 25°C in The Gilgit & Baltistan Region. Weather is generally good throughout the summer season,with clear skies and little rain or snow. However, weather in mountainous areas is difficult to predict, and short-lived storms can occur at any time.

PASSPORT & VISSAS

A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your Pakistan holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. You should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for the country that you visit.

PAKISTAN VISA

All nationalities require a visa to enter into Pakistan. The visa fee is approximately GBP £60 and you must apply for it prior to departure. To obtain a visa for Pakistan you will require a letter of introduction from an approved agency which will be provided by Trango Adventure.Visa applications can be made online or in person at your nearest Pakistan embassy. EQUIPMENT LIST

As a general rule, you should always try to keep the weight of your equipment to a minimum. The packed weight of your trek bag whilst trekking including your sleeping bag and mattress should be no more than 15.5 kgs. This limit which is set by the porters is strictly enforced and bags will be weighed prior to setting off on trek. Anything not required on the trek can be left at the group hotel in Islamabad. Please note that your mountaineering equipment will be packed into additional, communal kitbags at the start of the trekking and this equipment will not be part of your personal 12.5 kgs weight limit.
