Trekking and Mountain Royalty Fees Pakistan 2025-26

Government of Pakistan issuance of mountaineering and trekking permits for Trekking and mountain climbing activities in the Gilgit Baltistan region.

Procedure & Process:

a) Two types of Permits issued by the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Board for Peaks/Treks located in Restricted Areas of Gilgit-Baltistan:

Note: No Trekking Permit is required from the GB Council to visit Open Areas of Gilgit-Baltistan. All Peaks above 6500 Meters require a Permit from GB Council whether in an Open Area or a Restricted Area.

Climbing Permit

All foreign and Pakistani national need a permit to climb a peak that is above 6,500 meters and located in the Gilgit Baltistan region. All permits are obtained through the Gilgit Baltistan tourism department. Permit application process may take up to four weeks so we recomend applying for the permit as early as possible to avoid any delays. All peaks above 6,500 meters have a set royalty fees which has to be paid to obtain the permit.

Trekking Permit

All foreign and Pakistani nationals required to obtain a trekking permit to enter the restricted zone in the Karakoram range of Gilgit Baltistan. The restricted zone begins from Askoli in Shigar valley and covers the Baltoro region, K2, Broad Peak, Gasherburms and Gondogoro Pass.

Foreign National do not need to apply for a trekking permit separately if they have obtained a trekking and mountaineering visa. The trekking and mountaineering visa is equivalent to a trekking permit.

b) Documents Required:

• All applications for climbers/trekkers in respect of foreign tourists for the Peaks/Treks located in Gilgit-Baltistan are submitted to the Gilgit-Baltistan Council Secretariat through designated tour operators registered with the Department of Tourist Services Government of Pakistan including 7 sets of following documents:

  • Application from tour operator on their letterhead
  • Application form for mountaineering expedition
  • Name list of members of the expedition
  • Route map of proposed peak/trek
  • Passport copies of members of the expedition
  • Visa application form (duly filled) of foreign climbers/trekkers
  • CV of Expedition members
  • Copy of license of tour operator company

Procedure and Process:

  •  After receipt of the complete application from your tour Operator, the same is forwarded to concerned departments/agencies for obtaining requisite clearances
  • Time required: 4-6 weeks as per the existing Pakistan Visa Regime.

Pakistan Mountain Royalty Fees:

Depositing of Royalty Fees in Gilgit-Baltistan Council Account:

  • Zero royalty fee for peak up to 6500-M
  • Royalty fee on mountains situated in Gilgit, and Ghizer except on Spantik/Golden Peak.
  • Royalty fee on all peaks during the winter season (December-February)
  • No Discount on royalty fee on all peaks except as mentioned in (i) & (ii) above as detailed below:-

Depositing of Waste Management Fees in case the area located in Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP) in the account of CKNP as per the following

Environment Fee/Waste Management Fee will be  $ 190 for each member of the mountaineering expedition.

The Trekking Fee will be $ 150 per person for one month for Treks situated in Restricted areas of Gilgit Baltistan. However,$ 190  will also be charged as an Environment Fee/Waste Management Fee per person for one month to be deposited in the account of CKNP as mentioned above.

Issuance of Climbing Permit:

After receipt of all clearances from concerned departments, the Gilgit-Baltistan Council Secretariat issues a Climbing permit after completion of the following formalities by the concerned tour operator:

o Depositing of prescribed royalty fee
o Application to issue climbing permit
o Expedition members insurance/ Undertaking by tour operator assuring rescue operation funds:
o Tourist guide / Liaison Officer insurance and porter insurance

Information regarding the status of applications, while they are being processed can be obtained from the Tourism Section of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council Secretariat.

(Note) Trekking and Mountain Royalty fees in Pakistan are set by the Government Of Pakistan at the beginning of every year.

The climbing and trekking permit application process are usually taken care by tour companies so you do not need to do anything.
